THE HOLY HOVERER

Today we come to a verse that has fascinated me since college days when my father, in January 1965, gave me the Bible I am using for this special series of studies. I underlined Genesis 1:2, "And the Spirit of God moved [was brooding] upon the face of the waters." This is the first direct mention of the Holy Spirit in Scripture. His existence is implied in verse one, "In the beginning God..." As you know, the Hebrew word for God (Elohim) is plural and implies not only God the Father but also Christ the Son and the blessed Holy Spirit. This is also seen in Genesis 1:26, "Let us make man in our image, after our likeness..." We are three-dimensional (body, soul, spirit) just as our Creator is the great Three-in-One.
But let us look closer at the role of the Holy Spirit in creation. The Spirit of God "moved" upon the face of the waters. The ESV says, "And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters." I am calling Him the "Holy Hoverer" in today's lesson. In the margins of my Bible I have written "Luke 1:35." That verse has the angel speaking to Mary as follows: "The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Highest will overshadow you; therefore, also, that Holy One who is to be born will be called the Son of God." In the two greatest events in the Bible (Creation and the Virgin Birth) we see the Holy Spirit "hovering" over the face of the deep and the Virgin Mary. The results were spectacular! The angels sang for joy in both instances. Like a hen brooding over her eggs, the Holy Spirit spread its wings over the waters and the woman, and helped bring forth the world . . . and the Redeemer of the world! You and I need the presence of the Holy Spirit in our lives too. He not only hovers over us but more than that, He indwells us today. He produces spiritual fruit in our lives known simply as "the fruit of the Spirit." Let us thank God for the blessed Holy Spirit!
Prayer: Holy Father, we do thank You for the indwelling gift of the Holy Spirit. May He create in us that fruit that will be pleasing to You and helpful to others. Through Christ we pray.
