GENESIS AND JESUS

Genesis 1:1 contains only 10 words: "In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth." It is one of the first verses of Scripture that I learned when I was a little boy. Yet so much is contained in those 10 words. "If a philosopher had written the book of Genesis he would have worked out this theism in a very different way. The Bible opens with the doctrine of God. . . Without discussing the being of God, this opening statement of Genesis makes Him the Author of creation. God is not identified with the universe as Pantheism tries to make out in declaring that All is God. He is apart from creation and creates. Thus the world is not self-created or self-existent. It came by Divine fiat" (New Analytical Bible, p. 58).

It is good to compare the first chapter of Genesis and the first chapter of John's Gospel. Let's do that.

In the beginning God ~
In the beginning was the Word.
Created the heavens and the earth.

All things were created by Him.
And God said, Let there be light.

That was the true Light.
Let us make man in our image.

And the Word was made flesh.

"The design of the Bible is to reveal the Divine plan of redemption in Jesus Christ. . .We must begin where the Bible begins if we would trace the marvelous unfolding of God's redemptive processes in Christ, the central fact of the Bible" (ibid). From Adam to Abraham we will see the Gospel in purpose; from Abraham to Isaiah, the Gospel in promise; from Isaiah to Malachi, the gospel in prophecy.

Prayer: Loving Father, how good You are to give us a Redeemer in the person of Your Only Son, Jesus Christ. Today we are thankful that He was the true Light, who brings light to every man and woman who comes into the world. In His Name we pray, Amen.
