SHALL BE CALLED "IMMANUEL"

Star #12 in "Stars of Hope in the Old Testament Sky."

Seven hundred years before Messiah was born we find this wonderful prophecy declared by Isaiah the prophet. "Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign: Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a Son, and shall call His name Immanuel" (Isaiah 7:14 NKJV). This is a double prophecy and we have already studied the Virgin Birth. Now we come to the second part of the prophecy: "shall call His name Immanuel." The problem is, you can search the Gospels from beginning to end and not find Messiah called Immanuel, other than in the fulfillment of Isaiah 7:14. So let us look at the fulfillment in Matthew 1:22, 23. "So all this was done that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the Lord through the prophet, saying: 'Behold, the virgin shall be with child, and bear a Son, and the shall call His name Immanuel,' which is translated, 'God with us.'" Matthew now gives us the inspired meaning of Immanuel, "God with us."

Messiah was also called Jesus. An angel of the Lord told Joseph, "And she shall bring forth a Son, and you shall call His name JESUS, for He will save His people from their sins" (Matt. 1:21). But Jesus cannot save us from our sins unless He is "God with us,", i.e., Immanuel. "God was in Christ reconciling the world to Himself, not imputing their transgressions to them..." (2 Cor. 5:19). Therefore, every time we say Jesus we are, in effect, saying Immanuel, God with us.

Hymn: "Emmanuel, Emmanuel, His name is called Emmanuel; God with us, revealed in us; His name is called Emmanuel." (Bob McGee)
