HOUSE OF DAVID

Star #8 in "Stars of Hope in the Old Testament Sky."
"Behold, the days are coming, says the LORD, That I will raise to David a Branch of righteousness; A King shall reign and prosper, And execute judgment and righteousness in the earth. In His days Judah will be save, And Israel will dwell safely; Now this is His name by which He will be called: THE LORD OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS" (Jeremiah 23:5, 6 NKJV).
Yesterday we saw how Messiah would come from the family of Jesse. The Bible tells us that Jesse had eight sons (1 Sam. 16:10, 11). Once more we see God reducing all of Jesse's sons until He comes to David. God later made a covenant with David, telling him that He would set up his seed after him to ensure that Messiah would come from him and that David's house, kingdom and throne would be established forever (2 Samuel 7:12-16). That's one amazing prophecy for a young shepherd boy! David alludes to this promise in one of his psalms (Psalm 132:11). This was a Song of Ascents that our Lord undoubtedly sang whenever he approached Jerusalem for one of the three feast days all Jewish men were required to attend.
As prophesied, Jesus descended from David (Luke 3:23, 31 and Matthew 1:1). Many times in the gospels Jesus is called "Son of David." To my knowledge He was not called "Son of Abraham" but He is called "Son of David." I wonder if it was because David was a man after God's own heart, and Jesus was sent from the heart of God. In one of Paul's sermons he declared, "And when He had removed him [Saul], He raised up for them David as king, to whom also He gave testimony and said, 'I have found David the son of Jesse, a man after My own heart, who will do all My will.' From this man's seed, according to the promise, God raised up for Israel a Savior — Jesus . . ." (Acts 13:21-23). In the last chapter of the Bible we find Christ declaring Himself to be the seed of David: "I, Jesus, have sent My angel to testify to you these things in the churches. I am the Root and Offspring of David, the Bright and Morning Star" (Rev. 22:16). We thank God that Jesus came from the House of David, just as predicted by the prophets. In Him we will find our everlasting home.
Hymn: "To you, in David's town this day, Is born of David's line, The Savior who is Christ the Lord, And this shall be the sign, And this shall be the sign" (Nahum Tate)
