FAMILY OF JESSE

Star #8 in "Stars of Hope in the Old Testament Sky."
"There shall come forth a Rod from the stem of Jesse,
And a Branch shall grow out of his roots . . . And in that day there shall be a Root of Jesse, Who shall stand as a banner to the people; For the Gentiles shall seek Him, And His resting place shall be glorious" (Isaiah 11:1, 10 NKJV).
Here is a marvelous prophecy. Long before a man named Jesse ever was born we find him named in a Messianic prediction. I live in Missouri, home to the notorious Western outlaw Jesse James. Imagine if someone 700 years before Jesse James was born predicted his birth, where he would be born, and about 300 other significant things in his wretched life! But the emphasis is not really on Jesse in this text - it is on the One who would come from him as a Rod, as a Branch, as a Root; Who would stand as a banner to the people, including the Gentiles!
We only have to go once again to Luke 3:23, 32 and Matthew 1:6 to find fulfillment of Isaiah's prophecy. And again we see God reducing the prophecy to pinpoint detail. Messiah would come not just from the tribe of Judah but from a certain family line in the tribe of Judah - Jesse. So all other families, and there were many, who made up the tribe of Judah, are now eliminated. It is up to Jesse and his seed to keep the Messianic line intact. We first come across Jesse in the story of Ruth. Jesse was Ruth's grandson and we find both of them in the genealogy of Jesus. I am sure that the Hand of Providence was upon Jesse as he grew up so that he could become an ancestor of Messiah.
Hymn: "O come, Thou Rod of Jesse, free Thine own from Satan's tyranny; From depths of hell Thy people save And give them victory o'er the grave. Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel Shall come to thee, O Israel!" (Latin Hymn, translated by John M. Neale)
