Star #6 in "Stars of Hope in the Old Testament Sky." Numbers 24:17 ESV ~ "I see him, but not now; I behold him, but not near; a star shall come out of Jacob, and a scepter shall rise out of Israel..."

The most famous Jacob in the Christmas story is not Jacob Marley of "A Christmas Carol" fame, but the biblical Jacob who was an illustrious ancestor of Jesus Christ. You will remember that Isaac had two sons: Jacob and Esau. But now we see God eliminating one-half the linage of Isaac. Messiah would come through Jacob. Although Esau was the first-born son, God's marvelous plan for redemption included Jacob receiving the promise made to Abraham and Isaac. Esau, somewhat embittered by being shut out of the blessing, aligned himself with Ishmael, even marrying one of his daughters (Gen. 28:29). The stage was now set for the never-ending Arab-Israeli conflict that continues to this day.

Jacob's ultimate descendant is pictured as a "star" in today's text. That seems so fitting with the title of this series: "Stars of Hope in the Old Testament Sky." And of course there is the star that led the wise men to Bethlehem, where Jesus was born. The "scepter" is also mentioned. Only one in authority like a king was worthy of having the scepter. Jesus was that coming king. This wonderful prophecy was fulfilled when Jesus was born. "Jesus, when he began his ministry was about thirty years of age, being the son of Joseph . . the son of Jacob, the son of Isaac, the son of Abraham..." (Luke 3:23, 34).

Prayer/Hymn: "Born Thy people to deliver, Born a child and yet a king. Born to reign in us forever, Now Thy gracious kingdom bring. By Thine own eternal Spirit rule in all our hearts alone; By Thin all sufficient merit, Raise us to Thy glorious throne." (Charles Wesley)
