SEED OF WOMAN

Star #1 in "Stars of Hope in the Old Testament Sky." Genesis 3:15 (NKJV): "And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your seed and her Seed; He shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise His heel." How ironic is it that the first Messianic prophecy in the Bible was spoken to the serpent!

Women, sit up and take notice! Messiah is here called the Seed of woman. God could have sent a super angel like Gabriel or Michael, but He did not. He could have sent someone who had no parents, like Melchizedek (who was "without father, without mother" — Heb. 7:3), but He did not. Messiah would enter the world through the birth canal of a woman. And as we will see tomorrow, not just any woman!

We find the fulfillment of this wonderful prophecy in Galatians 4:4: "But when the fullness of the time had come, God sent forth His Son, born of a woman, born under the law, to redeem those who were under the law, that we might receive the adoption as sons." Just as God had said thousands of years earlier, Messiah was born of a woman. And let us not overlook the purpose of His birth in this passage — redemption! We were purchased not at the Cradle but at Calvary where Satan bruised the heel of the Messiah (a three-day bruise that only lasted until the Resurrection). But at the Cross, Jesus dealt Satan a deathblow (Heb. 2:14).

One final thought. Messiah is called "Seed of Woman" and not "Seed of Man" because Joseph had nothing to do with Mary's pregnancy. More on this tomorrow.

Hymn: "Once in royal David's city stood a lowly cattle shed, Where a mother laid her Baby in a manger for His bed: Mary was that mother mild, Jesus Christ her little Child" (Cecil F. Alexander)

An amazing prophecy which sets the stage for the rest of Scripture! "Seed of woman" is "pregnant" with meaning. Seed (zera in Hebrew, sperma in Greek) is used of men, not women, except Revelation 12:17 (see the whole 12th chapter for context). Of course Galatians 4:4 is applicable as you point out.
