STARS OF HOPE

This entry was posted on 12-07-2009 and is filed under MESSIANIC PROPHECY.

Today we begin a new series that will take us up to Christmas. I'm calling it "Stars of Hope in the Old Testament Sky." The people who lived in the Old Testament era lived under a dark sky because they were under law. But every once in awhile a prophet would utter something about the future that would be like a bright star in the sky to give them hope. Especially hope of Messiah (the anointed One, or the chosen One). Messianic prophecy, therefore, shall be our theme in December.

The Old Testament, written over a 1,500 year period, may contain as many as 300 Messianic prophecies. These promises were true because they came from God. "God is not a man, that he should lie, nor a son of man, that he should change his mind. Does he not speak and then not act? Does he promise and not fulfill?" (Num. 23:19 NIV). All of these marvelous predictions were fulfilled by Jesus of Nazareth, establishing him to be the Son of God (Rom. 1:2-4). Jesus the Christ (the Greek word for Messiah is Christ, meaning the anointed One, or the chosen One) declared that He came to fulfill these prophecies (Matt. 5:17). Notice what He said in Luke 24:44. "Everything must be fulfilled that is written about me in the Law of Moses, the Prophets and the Psalms." The Psalms were written about 1,000 years before Jesus was born; the Prophets, about 700 years. The men who prophesied were inspired by the Holy Spirit to do so because all Scripture is given by the inspiration of God (2 Tim. 3:16). Messiah was the focus of these prophecies because Jesus in the focal point of all Scripture. Tomorrow we shall look at the first Messianic prophecy and its fulfillment — the Seed of Woman.

Prayer: Holy Father, how grateful we are for the miraculous preservation of Your Holy Word. That we can have it and study it today is such a tremendous blessing. Guide us now in this prayerful pursuit of Messiah, Your Only Begotten Son. Through Christ, the Chosen One, we pray, Amen.

Dear Victor, My preaching theme for December is "The 'Star' of Bethlehem." I'll be interested to read your thoughts through December!

Dan, this HFTR series is based on my Adult Bible Class I am teaching at two churches in December: "Stars of Hope in the Old Testament Sky." I hope to cover about 50 Messianic prophecies in that series. In this Internet study I am selecting 14 prophecies that have to do with Messiah's birth.
