A THANKFUL MAN
This entry was posted on 11-23-2009 and is filed under THANKFULNESS.
"Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, let us be thankful..." (Heb. 12:28 NIV). I am a thankful man today. Why? Well, there are many reasons but let me share just this one. Today is my birthday. I am 64 today. Do you remember that line from a Beatles' song: "Will you still need me, will you still feed me, when I'm sixty-four?" That song seems so long ago (and it was) but here I am today at that very age. And I am still alive. I guess that is what I am most thankful for today — life. I can think of several of my college classmates (Sam, Don, Roger) who all died in their 50s. But I can also remember some of my high school classmates who went to Viet Nam and never even made it into their 20s (Jimmy, Ron, Mike). So, yes, I am thankful just to be alive today and to be in relatively good health.
I am thankful that I was born Nov. 23, 1945 to good and godly parents who raised me in "nurture and admonition of the Lord." I am thankful that I grew up when I did — the late 40s and 50s. What a time to be a kid in America! "I like Ike." The Lone Ranger. Stan Musial and Mickey Mantle. When radio was king. When the 10 Commandments were still respected for the most part. When marriage was between a man and a woman and divorce was not rampant. When you came home from school and mom was there with a fresh batch of donuts on the kitchen counter.
I am thankful for a good education, that I went to a good Bible college, and followed in my father's footsteps as a minister of the gospel. I am thankful for my sweetheart Evelyn, for the 42 years God has given us together, for the 6 wonderful children and 10 delightful grandchildren God has blessed us with. Having traveled the world I am thankful for America, still the best place to live in spite of some faults that we probably focus too much on anyway. I am thankful for the church and for the thousands of Christians I have met in my travels at home and abroad. Yes. I am thankful for that "kingdom which cannot be shaken." I am thankful for the Word of God that I can read, study, share, teach and preach. I am thankful for the promises in that Book, especially those relating to Heaven and Eternal Life. There is much to be thankful for!
Today I am "overflowing with thankfulness" (Col. 2:7) for friends like ... YOU!
Prayer: My Father in Heaven, thank You for the precious gift of life that You gave me 64 years ago. Thank You for extending my years and using me in spite of all the times I disappoint You. Help me to be a better servant for Your sake. In Jesus' name I ask this, Amen.
