"Having believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit, who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God's possession - to the praise of his glory" (Eph. 1:13 14 NIV).
The KJV uses the expression "the earnest of our inheritance" to describe the Holy Spirit. "Earnest money" in the first century is equivalent to "down payment" money in the twenty-first century. "The blessedness of God's indwelling Spirit assures us that in due time we shall receive the full inheritance of sons that God has promised" (Donald G. Hunt). God has given us the Holy Spirit as a down payment that guarantees our inheritance. Who in their right mind would turn down that deposit? Eugen H. Peterson's The Message says that the Holy Spirit "is the first installment on what's coming, a reminder that we'll get everything God has planned for us, a praising and glorious life." A few times I have helped some of my children by making the first installment or down payment for a car. It brings me joy to be able to do so. This pales in comparison with what our Father has done for all of us in giving us the promised Holy Spirit (Acts 2:38). He is our "blessed assurance" that we shall, as God's children, receive an inheritance some sweet day - "an inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade - kept in heave for you, who through faith are shielded by God's power until the coming of the salvation that is ready to be revealed in the last time. In this you greatly rejoice..." (1 Pet. 1:4-6a NIV). Is God good to us or what? Let us not be as Esau who "despised his inheritance." Let us rather pour out our hearts in praise to the One who has bestowed such a blessing as The Deposit.
