THE LIBERATOR

God willing, I will be making my 7th trip into Poland in 2010. Poland was the "killing fields" during World War II. I have visited 12 death camps thus far in my visits to Poland. I plan to visit two more in 2010. One thing that has always impressed my about those terrible places is the wonderful stories I have heard about their liberation. Both the liberated (prisoners) and the liberators (soldiers) can hardly talk about the liberation without breaking down. There's something about being liberated that is very emotional.

We have a Liberator. His name is the Holy Spirit. "For the law of the Spirit of life has set you free in Christ Jesus from the law of sin and death" (Rom. 8:2 ESV). Set free! Are there two more wonderful words than those? Once we were imprisoned, held captive, enslaved in a spiritual "death camp." There was no hope of escape, pardon, or liberation. Then the Liberator came! "The law of the Spirit of life has set you free!" Now we are free in Christ. Not free to sin but free to serve. I believe that Romans 8:1 is my favorite verse in the Book of Romans: "There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus." Some translations go on to say: "who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit" (NKJV). And why not? Since we were liberated by the law of the Spirit we will live the life of the Spirit. Since we were liberated by the Spirit we will be led by the Spirit. "For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God" (Rom. 8:14 NKJV).

Prayer: Father, we lift our hearts in praise today for the liberating work of your Holy Spirit in setting us free and keeping us set free to serve You with all our hearts. Through Christ we pray.
