THE ACCESSOR

"For through Him [Christ] we both have access by one Spirit to the Father" (Eph. 2:18 NKJV). In today's passage we discover yet another ministry of the indwelling Holy Spirit. He assists us in our access to God. We know that no one can come to the Father except through Christ (John 14:6). But here we learn that the Holy Spirit is also involved in coming into the presence of God.
Our offices here in the West Wing of the DeWelt Prayer Center are designed so that people first see my receptionist/office manager Linda. Then she brings them into my office. A better illustration might be the White House in Washington, D. C. No one sees the president until first going through the proper channels. In the case of the White House I believe that might be the Chief of Staff. All analogies are flawed and this one probably is too. But think of the Holy Spirit as being the one by Whom we gain access to the Father. We pray to God in Jesus name but we also pray "in the Spirit" (Eph. 6:18). Prayer seems to be the main avenue by which we gain access to the Father. The Holy Spirit ushers us into the presence of God as we approach His throne in Jesus' name.
People who have access are people who gain an advantage. This, of course, can be abused. But in the case of having access to the Father by the one Spirit this works to our good. All of us need help in life. None of us can make it on our own. The Holy Spirit is here to usher us into God's presence - perhaps by His own intercession for us (Rom. 8:26-27). In this He works in concert with Christ who does the same for us (Heb. 7:25). Let us thank God today that we have access to Him through Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit.
Prayer/Hymn: Breathe on me, Breath of God, Fill me with life anew, That I may love what Thou dost love, And do what Thou wouldst do. (Edwin Hatch)
