THE INTERCEDER

We all need an interceder from time to time. Sometimes we ourselves are called upon to intercede on behalf of others. But when it comes to prayer, all of us are in need of the Heavenly Interceder, the Holy Spirit! Have you ever begun to pray and find that you don't know how to express yourself as you would like to? Maybe you are just overwhelmed with grief or sadness. Don't lose heart. For this is when the Holy Spirit takes over and begins to pray on our behalf.

"Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words. And he who searches hearts knows what is the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God" (Rom. 8:26, 27 ESV). Isn't that encouraging? I wonder how many times the Holy Spirit has done that for you. I wonder what those "groanings too deep for words" sound like. I have heard a godly saint groaning in prayer. What must it be like when the Spirit Himself intercedes for us with "unspeakable yearnings and groanings too deep for utterance" (Amplified).

When the Spirit intercedes for us we can be sure of one thing: His prayers will always be according to the will of God. That gives us great assurance too. So many times we are not quite sure how we ought to pray. Not so with the Holy Spirit. I wonder, if after we have made some request, if the Holy Spirit doesn't override our request with what He knows is best for us. I believe this is why we must be "praying at all times in the Spirit, with all prayer and supplication" (Eph. 6:18 ESV). I will say it again: God gave us the Holy Spirit as our Helper. Therefore, He is here to help us when we pray. At all times pray in the Spirit.
