Someone has said there are 263 direct references to the Holy Spirit in the New Testament. We are looking an just a few of them to better understand the indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit, especially in regard to how He helps us in our daily living for Christ. One of the works of the Holy Spirit is His uniting work. He is a uniter, not a divider.

The Bible says, "For by one Spirit we were all baptized into one body - whether Jews or Greeks, whether slaves or free - and have all been made to drink into one Spirit" (1 Cor. 12:13 NKJV). The same Holy Spirit convicted us all of our sins and our need for Christ, including Christian baptism. We were all baptized into Christ (Gal. 3:27) where we are all one in Christ (Col. 3:11). This is the uniting work of the Holy Spirit. He created this marvelous unity. That's why the Bible also says, "Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace" (Eph. 4:3 NIV). Unity in the church is not ours to manufacture, but it is ours to maintain. The Spirit unites us as one. Woe be to the one who unties or unravels that unity! The Holy Spirit has made us one and we must keep His unity by being peacemakers in the body of Christ. Paul once pleaded with two Christian sisters to "agree with each other in the Lord" (Phil. 4:2). When we have the mind of the Spirit and when we walk in the Spirit we will be uniters too, just like He is a great uniter!

Hymn: Gracious Spirit, dwell with me; I myself would gracious be; And with words that help and heal Would Thy life in mine appear; And with actions brotherly Speak my Lord's sincerity. (Thomas Toke Lynch, 1855)
