THE SWORDSMAN

O.K., I am going to have to ask again: are these daily Bible studies coming through? More importantly, are they blessing you? I have not gotten any feedback for almost a month now. Let me hear from you today, O.K?
"And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God" (Eph. 6:17 NKJV). The Holy Spirit is our Swordsman. Paul likens the Word of God to the sword of the Spirit. Please notice that the word "sword" is four-fifths "word." It is the Spirit who makes the "word" a "sword." The writer of Hebrews expands on this idea. "For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the dividing of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart" (Heb. 4:12 NKJV). That's why Peter's hearers were "cut to the heart" on the Day of Pentecost. The Swordsman was at work that day - just as He is at work whenever we read the Word or hear the Word preached. This is all a part of His work of conviction and conversion. Have you ever felt guilty when the Word convicted you of some sin or shortcoming? That is The Swordsman doing his intended work. The Sword slices through our rough exterior and penetrates all the way to the soul.
Wherever the Word of God goes the Holy Spirit goes for the two cannot be separated. The Holy Spirit was involved in the giving of the Bible as well as the preaching of the Word. "...but holy men of God spoke as they were moved by the Holy Spirit" (2 Pet. 1:21 NKJV). The man who studies the Word or teaches the Word or preaches the Word has behind him (actually, within him) The Swordsman. The Holy Spirit is the one who brings the Word of Life to life. He is the one who convicts the world of sin and convinces the Christian to live the life that God wants him/her to live. I watch in fascination those ads on TV for the United States Marines. What is usually involved? The sword. Today let us thank God for the sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God!
Come, Holy Spirit, our souls inspire,
And lighten with celestial fire. ~ Rabanus Maurus
