THE SANCTIFIER

Our ministry supports a congregation in Cuba that is located east of Havana in the town of Sancti Spiritu (which is actually Latin for "Holy Spirit"). One of the works of the Holy Spirit is to make us holy through the work of sanctification (to set apart from sin to God for a special or spiritual service). We thank God for our faithful brethren in Sancti Spiritu just as Paul thanked God for the faithful saints in Thessalonica. "But we are bound to give thanks to God always for you, brethren beloved by the Lord, because God from the beginning chose you for salvation through sanctification by the Spirit and belief in the truth" (2 Thess. 2:13 NKJV).

I once heard Donald G. Hunt put it this way. God makes us godly; Christ makes us Christlike; and the Holy Spirit makes us holy and spiritual. It is His work to make us holy by sanctifying us for a life of service. According to Peter, God chooses us, the Spirit sanctifies us, and Christ sprinkles us with His blood (1 Pet. 1:2). All three work in concert to make us what we ought to be. Everything that we say and do in ministry is "sanctified by the Holy Spirit" according to Paul (Rom. 15:16). He makes our words holy, our actions holy, and our ministry acceptable to a holy God. He knows (as we should know) that we cannot do it on our own. The Sanctifier sanctions our ministry!

Hymn: "Come Holy Comforter, Thy sacred witness bear In this glad hour! Thou, who almighty art, Now rule in every heart And ne'er from us depart, Spirit of pow'r." (Unknown)
