THE RESTLESS HEART

Augustine, in his Confessions, said: "Thou hast made us for Thyself, and the heart of man is restless until it finds its rest in Thee." Truer words were never spoken. We were made for God. Until we understand that foundational truth we will always be restless souls. I remember a song from my youth. "The wayward wind is a restless wind; a restless wind, that yearns to wander" (Gogi Grant). I was a restless wind until I found my rest with the God who made me. How about you?
"But the wicked are like the troubled sea, when it cannot rest, whose waters cast up mire and dirt. 'There is no peace,' says my God, 'for the wicked.'" (Isa. 57:20 NKJV). On several occasions I have stood on the shores of the Pacific Ocean and thought of that passage of Scripture. I wonder if others who also stand on those shores think about their own restless hearts, and how they can only find peace in rest in God? All the pills and parties of this world cannot produce that lasting, spiritual and eternal peace. That kind of peace only comes from the Prince of Peace who came to bring peace and rest to our troubled hearts. What a promise we have from Him! "Come unto Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest" (Matt. 11:30 NKJV).
Hymn: "Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on Thee. When the shadows come and darkness falls, He giveth inward peace. O He is the only perfect resting place, He giveth perfect peace! Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on Thee" (Vivian Kretz Amsler)
