THE GREAT REALITY

This entry was posted on 09-21-2009 and is filed under ABOUT GOD.

Today we begin a study that can never really end. We will be contemplating the great God who created the universe. J. B. Phillips said, "God is the great reality. His resources are available and endless. His promise are real and glorious, beyond our wildest dreams." I do believe that if one started his or her study of God the day they were converted (in my case, age 12) they would never even begin to scratch the surface by the time they died.

It all starts, of course, with Genesis 1:1. "In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth." Four words into the Bible and you are confronted with God. God, as Phillips said, is the great reality. In Scripture, God is mentioned as such thousands of times. For example:

4,343 - NLT
4,186 - NIV
3,893 - KJV
3,868 - ESV
3,860 - RSV
3,855 - NKJV
3,848 - NASB

And that's just "God." You also have "Jehovah," "LORD," "Father," et al.

In what books of the Bible is God mentioned the most? Again the Blue Letter Bible resource gives us an idea. The following 10 books of the Bible (NIV) mention God over 100 times.

Psalms - 372
Deuteronomy - 294
Genesis - 198
2 Chronicles - 163
Acts - 163
Romans - 151
Job - 132
Isaiah - 120
Luke - 117
Jeremiah - 106

(Personally, I was surprised at the number of times God is mentioned in Deuteronomy and 2 Chronicles. I had no idea God was mentioned that many times in Acts and Romans.)

C. S. Lewis said, "A man can no more diminish God's glory by refusing to worship Him than a lunatic can put out the sun by scribbling the word darkness on the walls of his cell."
