DOING GOOD TO OTHERS

"Do all the good you can, to all the people you can, in all the ways you can, as often as ever you can, as long as you can." I have seen this quote attributed to John Wesley and Charles Spurgeon. Setting the source aside, the truth is a good one and one we should live by.

Doing good to others is our Christian responsibility. That is what Christ did and it is what we must do, 24/7 as they say. Jesus went about doing good and so must we. Here are a couple of passages from God's Word that admonish us to do good to others.

"Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up. Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, especially to those who belong to the family of believers" (Gal. 6:9, 10 NIV). This verse is rich in admonishment. Sometimes we want to give up doing good because it seems like no one appreciates our efforts. But was it right to do good, even though our effort went unnoticed or was not appreciated? Yes, it was. After all, the good we do is not lost on God. He takes note and will reward accordingly. Every day we are presented with opportunities to do good for someone - to all people. But especially, Paul says, to fellow believers. We can't do that, of course, if we are only in contact with them for one hour a week at the church assembly.

"For it is God's will that by doing good you should silence the ignorant talk of foolish men. Live as free men, but do not use your freedom as a cover-up for evil; live as servants of God" (1 Pet. 2:15, 16 NIV). Doing good to others is God's way of shutting up our critics. It's hard to say bad things about a person who does good things, and is known in the church and community for doing such.

Hymn: "To love someone more dearly every day, To help a wandering child to find his way, To ponder o'er a noble thought and pray, And smile when evening falls, And smile when evening falls; This is my task" (Maude Louise Ray).
