LITTLE DEEDS OF KINDNESS

Recently we were at our daughter Emily's home in Texas. I noticed on her bulletin board in the kitchen a little 4-line poem written by my father, the late Dale V. Knowles. Perhaps you would like to put it on your bulletin board or refrigerator. It is titled "Lasting Things" and goes like this:

Little deeds of kindness,
Little words of praise,
Taking but a moment,
Last a thousand days.

("Lasting Things" ~ Dale V. Knowles, Copyright 1978)

We have a Christian responsibility to be kind to everyone we meet, no ifs, ands or buts about it. Hear the Word of the Lord. "Be kind and compassionate to one another..." Eph. 4:32). "Make sure that nobody pays back wrong for wrong, but always try to be kind to each other and to everyone else" (1 Thess. 5:15). "And the Lord's servant must not quarrel; instead he must be kind to everyone..." (2 Tim. 2:24). "For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith goodness...and to godliness, brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness, love" (2 Pet. 1:5, 7).

We live in a world of callousness and cruelty. Ian MacLaren said, "Be kind; everyone you meet is fighting a hard battle." You will never regret saying a kind word. Some people are dying to hear one. Kindness creates confidence. It can be a ray of sunshine to those who live in darkness and depression. It can mean the difference between life and death for someone! Someone has said, "Speak your kind words soon, for you never know how soon it will be too late." For you and the one who needs to hear a kind word! What time is it? It is time to speak a kind word. It is time to do "little deeds of kindness."

Prayer: Kind and Loving Father, help us to be like You. Create in us a holy desire to be kind to others. Through Christ we pray.
