TO BE GENEROUS

Ebeneezer Scrooge was anything but generous. Charles Dickens described him as "a squeezing, wrenching, grasping, scraping, covetous old sinner!" (from "A Christmas Carol"). I don't want to be an Ebeneezer Scrooge, do you? Scripture commands us to be generous (the opposite of Scrooge's covetousness). Hear the Word of the Lord!
"Command them to do good, to be rich in good deeds, and to be generous and willing to share" (1 Tim. 6:18 NIV). Have you ever thought that you are actually commanded to be generous?
"And do not forget to do good and to share with others, for with such sacrifices God is well pleased" (Heb. 13:16 NIV). If God is pleased with our generosity, what do you suppose His response is when he sees us being covetous or stingy?
"Give, and it will be given unto you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you" (Luke 6:38 NIV). The measure of our blessings depends upon our generosity (or lack of).
John Bunyan said, "A man there was, and they called him mad; / The more he gave, the more he had." So it is true that "the hand that gives, gathers."
Prayer: Dear Lord, help us to be more like You - the Greatest Giver the world has ever known. Through Christ we pray.
