BE COMPASSIONATE

Jesus was often "moved with compassion" to help other people. Those who are Christians will be filled with compassion too. It is our responsibility to show compassion to others. The apostle Paul said, "Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you" (Eph. 4:32 NIV). But showing compassion is not easy. Henri Nouwen said, "Let us not underestimate how hard it is to be compassionate. Compassion is hard because it requires the inner discipline to go with others to the place where they are weak, vulnerable, lonely, and broken. But this is not our spontaneous response to suffering. What we desire most is to do away with suffering by fleeing from it or finding a quick cure for it."

The story of the Good Samaritan reveals how one man had compassion. The priest and the Levite saw the wounded man but "passed by on the other side." The Samaritan, however, did something more than look. "He took pity on him. He went to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring on oil and wine. Then he put the man on his own donkey, took him to an inn and took care of him." (Luke 11:33, 34). How much sleep did he get that night? Did he sleep on the floor while the wounded man slept in his bed? The next morning he paid the innkeeper extra money to look after the victim. It all started when he had compassion for a man he did not know.

"Finally, all of you, live in harmony with one another; be sympathetic, love as brothers, be compassionate and humble" (1 Pet. 3:8 NIV).

Thanks, Victor. I preached recently on "Where your treasure is, there will your heart be also." This is a good example coverting earthly currency into Hevenly treasure.
