A CHRISTIAN'S RESPONSIBILITIES

A Christian is responsible to other Christians. No man is an island unto himself. We are our brother's keeper. Today we will begin a study on the matter of our responsibility to fellow Christians.
We are to do our best to be at peace with our brothers and sisters in Christ. "If it is possible, as far as it depends upon you, live at peace with everyone" (Rom. 12:18 NIV). Just think of how many church problems could be solved if we all took this command to heart. The responsibility lies with us. Notice Paul says, "as far as it depends upon you." Peace depends upon someone. Paul says, in effect, "let it depend upon you." I remember a saying printed on a banner that was hung up in a church during a revival meeting. It said, "What kind of church would this church be if everyone was just like me?" That is a good question to consider.
The Bible also says, "Make every effort to live in peace with all men and to be holy; without holiness no one will see the Lord" (Heb. 12:14 NIV). A little effort will not do. It is not enough to try once to live in peace with others and then give up when our effort falls short. "Make every effort" says the writer. Jesus pronounced a blessing on the peacemakers, not on the peace lovers or the peace talkers. When we start each day perhaps we should say: "Today, as much as is possible; as far as it depends on me; I will make every effort to live at peace with all whom I shall meet." Try this and see if it makes a difference.
Prayer: Loving Father, grant us the desire and the grace to live in peace with everyone. We ask this in the name of the Prince of Peace, Amen.
