THE PROMISE OF PARDON
This entry was posted on 08-14-2009 and is filed under RIGHTEOUS REMNANT.
One of the greatest promises in the Bible is specifically directed to the righteous remnant. I have read this verse many times but had failed to see to whom it was given. "Who is a God like you, who pardons sin and forgives the transgression of the remnant of his inheritance? You do not stay angry forever but delight to show mercy. You will again have compassion on us; you will tread our sins underfoot and hurl all our iniquities into the depths of the sea. You will be true to Jacob, and show mercy to Abraham, as you pledged on oath to our fathers in days long ago" (Micah 7:18, 19 NIV).
Notice that the promise of pardon is for the remnant of His inheritance. It is for those who have been faithful and true. When Micah says, "You will have compassion on us" he is referring to the remnant. When he talks about "our sins" being trodden underfoot and "our iniquities" being hurled into the depths of the sea, he is referring to the remnant of His heritage. Whether it is the remnant of His people Israel in the days before Christ or the remnant of His church today, the point is the same: God will pardon sin and forgive transgression. He delights to show mercy. He will tread our sins underfoot and cast all our sins into the depths of the sea. He will be true to His pledged word. Our part is to have a tender heart and a penitent attitude when we sin. Will God forgive when I confess? The Bible answers, "Yes!" "If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness" (1 John 1:9 NIV). Only the Chrisian can have this calm assurance.
Hymn: "Pardon for sin and a peace that endureth, Thy own dear presence to cheer and to guide; Strength for today and bright hope for tomorrow, Blessings all mine, with ten thousand beside." (T. O. Chisholm)
