Today, August 7, 1967, marks our 42nd wedding anniversary. Evelyn (Saylor) and I were united in marriage on that date at the Church of Christ in Hamburg, Iowa. My father conducted the wedding ceremony. One of the songs that was sung was "Each for the other, and both for the Lord." And that is the way we have tried to live our married life ever since. "Vows sweetly spoken, may they never be broken; each for the other, and both for the Lord."

We took as the lodestar verse for our marriage, Matthew 6:33: "But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added unto you." Forty-two years of serving and trusting God have proved this to be true. "All these things" (in the context the necessities of life - food, clothing, shelter) have indeed been added unto us. Not always in abundance. Not always when we thought they should be. But always in God's grace and perfect timing. We don't have much by the world's standard of living, but we have enough. And we have each other. "To have and to hold, from this day forward."

In some ways 1967 seems so long ago - and in other ways in seems like only yesterday. That's the way our mind and memory works. But one thing remains constant: we believe and know that marriage is a lifetime commitment. "What God has joined together, let not man separate" (Matt. 19:6). Those nine words of Jesus mean something to us. Divorce is not an "option." It has never even entered our thinking. Nor has the word been spoken, even in jest. We were joined together on August 7, 1967 and will remain "one flesh" until one of us is called home. Our love is built on nothing less than Jesus' love and righteousness. On Christ the solid rock we stand, all other ground is sinking sand.

Prayer: Holy Father, thank You for joining us together forty-two years ago today. Keep us together by Your grace and power until that day that You call one of us Home. Through Christ we pray.

That's great! Congratulations to you both. If you have the words to the song "Each for the Other..." could you email them to me?

Thanks, Dan. I will try to find them, or Evelyn will, and we will send them to you when we locate them.
