Jesus was a homeless person. Did you ever stop and think about that? He once said, "Foxes have holes, and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay his head" (Luke 9:58 ESV). How does that make you feel? Would you have taken Jesus into your home? Fortunately, there was someone who did on several occasions. Can you think who it was?

Whenever Jesus entered Bethany He had a place He could call home. It was the home of Martha. "Now as they went on their way, Jesus entered a village. And a woman named Martha welcomed him into their house" (Luke 10:38). This is just a few verses after Jesus said that He had nowhere to lay His head. He found a home in Bethany. What was there about this home where Jesus felt welcome to come and go? Martha and her sister Mary had the gift of hospitality. Someone said, "Who practices hospitality entertains God Himself." In this case that was literally true. An old Jewish proverb says, "Hospitality is one form of worship." A Danish proverb says, "When there is room in the heart there is room in the house." All of this was true of the house in Bethany. "Six days before the Passover, Jesus therefore came to Bethany, where Lazarus was, whom Jesus had raised from the dead. So they gave a dinner for him there. Martha served, and Lazarus was one of those reclining with him at the table" (John 12:1, 2). What a wonderful scene! And then Mary anoints His feet and wipes His feet with her hair and "the house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume" (v. 3). The latch was always out and the light was always on for Jesus in Bethany. It was the one place He could go to find rest and refreshment. Is you home a haven of rest for others?

Hymn: "Have you any room for Jesus, He who bore your load of sin? As He knocks and asks admission, sinner, will you let Him in? Room for Jesus, King of glory! Hasten now, His word obey; swing the heart's door widely open, bid Him enter while you may." (Author unknown)
