THE STRENGTH OF A NATION

Benjamin Disraeli, former defense minister of Israel, defined home as: "The best security of civilization." Lydia Huntley Sigourney defined home as: "The strength of a nation." There is an old maxim that may say it best: "As the home goes, so goes the nation." Well, how is our nation going? "To hell in a hand basket!" some may respond. I do not remember a time when America's homes were in worse shape than they are today. We are cursed not so much with juvenile delinquency as we are adult delinquency.

Consider an inspired note from Israel's history. "Surely I have taught you statutes and judgments, just as the LORD my God commanded me, that you should act according to them...be careful to observe them, for this is your wisdom and your understanding in the sight of the peoples who will hear all these statutes and say, 'Surely this great nation is a wise and understanding people'" (Deut. 4:5 6 NKJV). Israel was strong because of their homes. They taught their children and grandchildren the word of the Lord. As long as they did so they were a strong nation. I look back on our own nation's history when the word of God was welcomed, read and taught in the schools, the churches and of course the homes. I believe we started to lose our greatness in the early 60s when all three institutions started diminishing the worth of the Bible.

Yes, the strength of any nation
On its family life depends,
And no program can replace it -
For its failure make amends.
Would we build a real Gibraltar,
For the past make recompense?
We must know the Family Altar
Is our nation's best defense.
