A HAVEN OF REST

Sometimes I watch my little 5-year-old twins at play and wonder how they can keep going at such a pace from dawn to dusk and then some. "Don't you want to rest?" I ask them. "No, Grandpa," they reply, "We're not tired at all. We're having too much fun." I guess I used to be that way too and I imagine you can remember those days too. But the older we get the more appealing the "rest" aspect of heaven becomes to us. Yesterday I was on the road eight hours and it was a welcome sign that I saw that read: "Rest stop ahead. One mile." That's the way heaven should appeal to us.

"There the wicked cease from turmoil, and there the weary are at rest" (Job 3:17).

"And to you who are troubled rest with us, when the Lord Jesus shall be revealed from heaven..." (2 Thess. 1:7).

"There remains, then, a Sabbath-rest for the people of God" (Heb. 4:7).

"Then I heard a voice from heaven say, 'Write: Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord from now on.' 'Yes,' says the Spirit, 'they will rest from their labor, for their deeds will follow them'" (Rev. 14:13).

I think this last verse says it best. I can just picture those who labored long and hard in the kingdom of God at last resting from all their work. You know how a good night of rest feels after a long day of work. Well, multiply that by a hundred million times and you can maybe imagine how heaven will be a haven of rest!

Hymn: "O land of rest, for thee I sigh! When will the moment come - when I shall lay my armor by, and dwell in peace at home?" (Elizabeth Mills)
