HEAVEN, I'M IN HEAVEN

Do you remember that song written by Irving Berlin, "Heaven, I'm in Heaven"? He went on to say, "And my heart beats so that I can hardly speak; and I seem to find the happiness I seek when we're out together dancing, cheek to cheek." All kinds of people are seeking all kinds of happiness, but ultimate happiness will not be realized until we are at last and forever in the wonderful place that the Bible calls "heaven."

The word "heaven" means "to lift, to heave upward." I once preached in a little place called Heavener, Oklahoma. Heaven, however, is a place that is upward. Jesus was taken up into heaven. "After he said this, he was taken up before their very eyes, and a cloud hid him from their sight. They were looking intently up into the sky where he was going, when suddenly two men dressed in white stood beside them. 'Men of Galilee,' they said, 'why do you stand here looking into the sky? This same Jesus, who has been taken from you into heaven, will come back in the same way you have seen him go into heaven'" (Acts 1:9-11).

Heaven is upward. It is just as real a place as Joplin or Jerusalem. It is the eternal dwelling place of God (Matt. 5:16), Jesus (1 Pet. 3:22), the angels (Matt. 18:10), and the saved (2 Cor. 5:1,2). That's why I want to go there. That's why we must always be living on the upward way. This world is not our home. Let's quit living like it is. Heaven is our ultimate destination and happiness. I wanted to be "lifted up" to heaven just as Jesus was. In Houston and Cape Canaveral these words are heard at launch: "Liftoff! We have liftoff!" Well, those are the words I want to hear when I am lifted up off this earth and taken upward into heaven!

Hymn: "There is a habitation, built by the living God, for all of every nation who seek that grand abode. O Zion, lovely Zion, I long thy gates to see, O lovely Zion, lovely Zion, when shall I dwell in thee?" (L. H. Jameson).
