YOU HAVE COME

"But you have come to Mount Zion, to the heavenly Jerusalem, the city of the living God" (Heb. 12:22a NIV).
The writer has been discussing how important it is to live in peace and be holy for "without holiness no one will see the LORD" (12:14). He does not want anyone to miss the grace of God (12:15). How tragic it would be to miss heaven! I would not miss heaven for all the world. But love for the world will cause some to miss heaven! What a bad trade!
"But you have come." This stands in contrast with Mount Sinai (the law), according to 12:18. We have come, rather, to the good news of the gospel that tells us about "the heavenly Jerusalem, the city of the living God." Later the writer will say, "For here we do not have an enduring city, but we are looking for the city that is to come" (13:14). That city is the New Jerusalem. John called it "the Holy City, the New Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride beautifully dressed for her husband" (Rev. 21:2, 10). Today we come to it by faith. When we die we will come to it in reality. I may never visit Jerusalem in Israel, though I would like to; but I do not want to miss the heavenly Jerusalem, the city of the living God! My Savior is there, my loved ones are there, I want to be there more than any place on earth!
Hymn: "Jerusalem! Jerusalem! Lift up your gates and sing. Hosanna in the highest, Hosanna to your King!"
