WE'RE BEING WATCHED

Have you ever had the feeling that you were being watched? Hebrews 12:1 implies that we are being watched. "Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us." Yesterday we identified the "great cloud of witnesses" as the spirits of believers who have died in Christ (12:23). Though they see nothing that would bring them pain or tears, they are watching us as we run the Christian race. They are cheering for us to throw off everything that would slow us down (including entangling sins) and run to win the race - just like they did.
When I was a sophomore in high school I went to state in the 50-yard dash. We ran on an indoor track (it was either Des Moines or Iowa City as I recall). My father could not be there that day but, of course, my coach was. As soon as the gun sounded I heard the voice of my coach crying, "Come on, Vic!" I was not expecting that and it spurred me on the finish line in that heat. There are times in our Christian life when we need to remember that the great cloud of witnesses are cheering for us to do our best. We might not win our heat or the state championship, but we must always give our all and do the best we can. What is hindering your spiritual life right now? Is there a sin that seems to trip you up more than others? Remember the godly lives of those who have gone on before you. They received the crown of life and you will too. I do not want to miss heaven! I want to see all the faithful, and especially my loved ones who have gone on before me. This motivates me to "give of my best to the Master."
