WHAT WERE THEY THINKING? Part 3

"Therefore, God is not ashamed to be called their God, for He has prepared a city for them" (Heb. 11:16b, NKJV).

The "therefore" in this verse takes us back a couple of verses. Because they lived in faith and died in faith; because they did not receive the promises yet embraced them fully; because they confessed fully and freely that they were pilgrims and strangers on the earth; because they declared plainly that they were seeking a homeland; because they refused to think of the land from which they had departed - or even this present planet - as their final destination; because they longed for heaven, Almighty God was not ashamed of them, or to be called their God!

Sometimes I wonder if God is ashamed of us. Our lack of trusting faith. Our failure to serve Him with all our heart. Our insistence of focusing on and fussing about earthly things. Our few minutes we spend in thinking about heaven. Our faint desire for heaven. Maybe I should say "my" instead of "our." I'm writing this for my own good as well as your good. The fact that God "has prepared a city for them" should capture my imagination. John gives us a look at that city in Revelation 21 - the Holy City, New Jerusalem - an indescribable city where there shall be no more pain, tears, sorrow, crying, or death. Imagine a city with no hospitals, no prisons, no emergency wards, no ambulance or police car sirens, no cops on the street, no crime in the neighborhood, no mortuaries, no cemeteries, no divorce courts, none of those things. God has prepared a place like that - for the faithful! One big reason for you and me to be faithful unto death!

Hymn: "Earth holds no treasures but perish with using, however precious they be; yet there's a country to which I am going: Heaven holds all to me" (Tillet S. Teddlie)

I do look forward to "Honey from the Rock" each day. It is a wonderful way of interfering with my "focusing on and fussing about earthly things".

Prayers for you, your Dad and family
