THE PROPHETS' FAITH

"And why should I go on? For my time would fail me if I told of...the prophets" (Heb. 11:32, An American Translation - Goodspeed).
The writer of Hebrews has previously mentioned six people of faith by name: Gideon, Barak, Samson, Jephthah, David, and Samuel. Now he cites an entire group - "the prophets." Each one deserves their own story. Each one manifested faith in God in trying circumstances. But as a group they are listed, not as individuals. In the prophets we see solidarity in spiritual suffering. God placed burdens on them that he did not place on ordinary men and women. They were made of sterner stuff. They stand as one in God's Hall of Faith.
Kyle M. Yates, in his book Preaching from the Prophets, mentions the distinguishing marks of a prophet. He is: an uncompromising individualist, conscious of a divine call, not bound by public opinion, in immediate contact with God, a man of action, conscious of God's authority, one who stands alone, a man of prayer, one who lives a lonely, solitary life, clean and consecrated in his life and character, an outspoken critic of specific evils in social order, one who does not deal in abstractions, God agent to reveal the future to the people. Let us thank God today for the faith of the prophets who ultimately point us to the greatest prophet of all, Jesus Christ, who was "more than a prophet," indeed, the very Son of God who died on the cross for the sins of us all.
