BARAK'S FAITH

"And what more shall I say? For time would fail me to tell of ... Barak ..." (Heb. 11:32 ESV).

No, we are not speaking today of our president's faith. Long before Barack Obama lived a man of biblical faith. Read his story in Judges 4:1-24. His name means "lightning" and God used this man to decorate the sky with his amazing story of faith. I do not know why the writer of Hebrews does not include Deborah in this short list. Deborah, a prophetess, was also a judge in Israel. She seems to be the person behind Barak who kept pushing him on to be a man of faith. [Her name means "bee." Maybe she "stung" him into action! When you have a woman whose name means "bee" and a man whose name means "lightning" something explosive is bound to happen!]

"And Deborah said to Barak, 'Up! For this is the day in which the LORD has given Sisera into your hand. Does not the LORD go before you?' So Barak went down...with 10,000 men following him. And the LORD routed Sisera and all his chariots and all his army before Barak by the edge of the sword" (Judges 4:14,15 ESV). The 5th chapter of Judges is titled "The Song of Deborah and Barak." Barak could not have been who he was without the help of Deborah, Israel's "mother figure" (5:7). Many times our faith is made stronger when a close friend spurs us on to greater efforts. Sometimes all it takes is a "bee sting" for us to be a "lightning bolt" for God!

Prayer: Almighty God, I thank You today for all the "Deborahs" that you have brought into my life to help me be a "Barak." Through Christ I pray.

I can't help thinking about whose faith was in action here. Deborah encouraged but would he had done anything WITHOUT Deborah. I wonder how many are simply living someone else's faith and if by themselves, they really would not have much. Just something I've thought about before.
