GIDEON'S FAITH

"And what more shall I say? I do not have time to tell about Gideon..." (Heb. 11:32 NIV).
The writer of Hebrews, because of the scarcity of time, begins a short list of other heroes of faith. Six are mentioned by name and a seventh group, the prophets, are lumped into one category. He is ticking off the names as they are brought to his remembrance by the Holy Spirit. First on the list: Gideon.
Take some time today to look at Gideon's story (Judges 6-8). His exploits of faith are so great that even today we have a religious organization named after him: The Gideons. Nearly every hotel or motel I have stayed in during my travels have included a copy of God's Word in a bedside drawer, courtesy of The Gideons. None of us can be sure which demonstration of Gideon's faith the writer of Hebrews had in mind. There are several possibilities. Was it when he destroyed the altar of Baal, put out a fleece before God, had his army divinely reduced, was encouraged by a dream, led a great victory in battle, refused the kingship of Israel, or judged Israel for 40 years? Like the authorship of Hebrews, "only God knows." My choice would be when God reduced his army to 300 and told Gideon, "By the three hundred men who lapped I will save you, and deliver the Midianites into your hand" (Judges 7:7 NKJV). Faith comes by hearing the Word of God. Gideon believed God and led Israel to triumph over the Midianites crying, "The sword of the LORD and of Gideon!" (7:20). Gideon's name means "hewer of wood." If God can use a wood chopper, he can use you!
Hymn: "The battle is the Lord's! Stand still, my soul, and view / the great salvation God has wrought revealed for you. / Then, resting in His might, lift high His triumph song, / For power, dominion, kingdom, strength to Christ belong!" (Margaret Clarkson)
