THE FAITH OF MOSES, PART 3

"He regarded disgrace for the sake of Christ as of greater value than the treasures of Egypt, because he was looking ahead to his reward" (Heb. 11:26 NIV).

Today verse is a treasure chest, packed with jewels of spiritual insight. "Value." "Treasures." "Reward." Those three words capture our imagination and make our heart beat just a little faster, don't they? But our hero of the hour, Moses, was a man who lived by faith. By faith he "considered the reproach of Christ greater riches than the treasures of Egypt"  (NASB). The NLT has "Messiah" for "Christ." What is this? Moses and the Messiah in the same verse! Moses and Jesus. The great lawgiver and the great lifegiver. Ages apart yet connected here. Moses knew Messiah would come and he was willing to suffer for His cause before He was ever born in Bethlehem.

The glittering "treasures of Egypt" still fascinate people today. Mose could have lived like a king. He could have had the vast and limitless possessions of a Pharaoh. But he looked beyond a king and saw the King of kings. He chose godliness over glitter. Of reproach and disgrace he said, "Bring it on!" Of glitter and glamor he said, "Take it away!" Moses sets a high standard. He knew what was of "greater value." That's because he was constantly "looking ahead to his reward." On the Day of Judgment those rewards will be passed out to the deserving. Those who opted for the "treasures of Egypt" in this life will finally realize they made a horrible choice. Those who, by faith, chose to suffer reproach for Christ will be given the greatest reward of all - eternal life in Heaven.

Hymn: O for a closer walk with God, a calm and heav'n-ly frame, a light to shine upon the road that leads me to the Lamb! (William Cowper)
