THE FAITH OF MOSES, PART 1
This entry was posted on 03-13-2009 and is filed under FAITH.
Today we come to one of the true giants of faith in all of Scripture, Moses. Here is what Herbert Lockyer says about him in his book Their Finest Hour. "As the only man in the Bible to have had the Almighty God as his undertaker, for we read that, 'God buried him' (Deut. 34:6), Moses must have been an unusual man to merit such a singular honor. This gigantic figure casts his lengthy shadow over Scripture, in which his name occurs over 750 times in some 30 books." His faith will merit more than one entry in our Honey from the Rock daily Bible study!
"By faith Moses, when he had grown up, refused to be known as the son of Pharaoh's daughter" (Heb. 11:24 NIV). Sometimes faith is known for what it does. In this case, however, faith is known for what he does not do - what it refuses to do! What has your faith caused you to refuse lately? It is so easy just to go with the flow, to do what everyone else is doing, even half-hearted, lukewarm church members at times! Faith marches but sometimes it shouts, "Company, halt!"
Look at what Moses turned down - the coveted title of being known as "the son of Pharaoh's daughter." He could have had that title and all that went with it: privileges, riches, fame, "wine, women and song." He might have risen to be a respected Prime Minister or even a fabled Pharaoh! But he denied himself. Faith, therefore, is connected with self-denial. What have you denied yourself lately? Jesus said, "If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross and follow me" (Matt. 16:24). Do you have smooth shoulders or do they bear a discernible and distinct impression of the cross that you carry - carry by faith? Your cross: don't leave home without it!
Prayer: Holy Father, enable us this day with a faith like Your servant Moses, a faith that will cause us to say "No!" the the things that allure us and charm us. Through Christ we pray.
