"Who are these people with such strange names and why are they included in the Faith Chapter?" you may be thinking. Although not named in Hebrews 11, they are elsewhere in the Bible. They are the parents of Moses, the great Lawgiver of Israel. Here is how the text reads: "By faith Moses' parents hid him for three months after he was born, because they saw he was no ordinary child, and they were not afraid of the king's edict" (Heb. 11:23 NIV).

Amram and Jochebed both came from the tribe of Levi (Exo. 2:1). To hold down the population of the Israelites, the king of Egypt issued an edict that all baby boys were to be cast into the Nile river. Amram and Jochebed's faith in God enabled them not to be afraid of the king's command. Their faith also empowered them to protect their son because they perceived that he was "no ordinary child." Would God that parents today would see that in their children. Would God that the leaders of our nation and courts would rescind all edicts that consign children to death before they are even born!

What kind of faith does it take to hide your child for three months, fearing that someone will hear his cries and turn you into the authorities? What kind of faith does it take to place your baby in a basket and set him afloat in a river that is infested with snakes and crocodiles? And here we must include Moses' sister, Miriam, for she certainly was a woman of bold faith as well. Because of this families' tremendous trust in God Moses was spared and went on to become a giant of faith for God. But it all started with the faith of two humble people from the tribe of Levi: Amram and Jochebed. Parents, your faith is the key to your children's success.

Prayer: Dear Lord, would you bless the parents of small children today who are reading these words. Help them to see the significance of their faith. And may their children grow to become leaders in Your kingdom on earth in the years to come. Through Christ we pray.
