THE FAITH OF ABRAHAM, PART 1

"By faith Abraham, obeyed when he was called to go out to the place which he would receive as an inheritance. And he went out, not knowing where he was going" (Heb. 11:8 NKJV).
Abraham was a giant of faith. Seven verses in Hebrews 11 are given over to this man's tremendous faith (vs. 8-10, 17-19). So we will take several days to examine his obedient faith. The name of Abraham appears more than 300 times in Scripture! He is mentioned in 20 of the 66 books of the Bible. Herbert Lockyer said, "Abraham's place in the Bible's portrait gallery is altogether unique and unapproachable. He stands out as a landmark in the spiritual history of the world." He alone is called "the father of the faithful." Three times he is called "the friend of God."
Abraham was 75 years old when he got the call from God to leave his country (present-day Iraq) and go to a land that God would show him. God never told him where this land was (it turned out to be Canaan (present-day Israel). "So Abram [as he was called then] departed as the LORD had spoken to him" (Gen. 12:4). Biblical faith does not have to understand all the details. Biblical faith obeys even when the details are not spelled out. "And he went out, not knowing where he was going" (Heb. 11:8). Though Sarah is not mentioned here, we have to admire her faith too. She went with Abraham and there is no record of her asking "Why?" or "Where are we going?" Abraham obeyed God "in complete ignorance of his destination" (Phillips).
Prayer: Holy Father, help us to be a true son of Abraham by always taking You at Your word and moving out in faith, even into uncharted waters. Through Christ we pray.
