THE FAITH THAT SAVES

Today we begin a brief series I am calling "The Faith that Saves." Our text will be the 11th chapter of Hebrews. The bottom line: the faith that saves is the faith that obeys.
Donald G. Hunt said, Faith that counts with God is faith that...
works - Gal. 5:6
walks - 2 Cor. 5:7
lives - Gal. 2:20
The "faith chapter" of the Bible bears this out. The faith that saves is the faith that obeys.
"By faith Abel offered to God a more excellent sacrifice than Cain, through which he obtained witness that he was righteous, God testifying of his gifts: and through it he being dead still speaks" (Heb. 11:4 NKJV). Abel's faith continues to speak to us today. It is not enough to offer mere mental assent. God wants us to demonstrate our faith. Anyone can say they have faith. Every hero or heroine of faith in Hebrews 11 demonstrated their faith. "Through faith Abel offered to God a more acceptable sacrifice" (Weymouth). This act of faith caused him to gain God's approval as an upright man (Goodspeed).
Prayer: Dear Lord, we want to offer to You a more excellent sacrifice. By Your grace empower us to do just that by faith. Through Christ we pray.
