THE FAITH OF ABRAHAM, PART 2

"By faith he [Abraham] dwelt in the land of promise as in a foreign country, dwelling in tents with Isaac and Jacob, the heirs with him of the same promise" (Heb. 11:9 NKJV).

It's not the "dwelling in tents" that impresses me in this verse. Now, if you and I had to do that, well, that would be impressive. We are used to living in our nice homes with central heat and air and all the amenities. No, what impresses me in this text is the fact that he dwelt "in a foreign country." I have done a little bit of world travel. Some of my darkest days were spent in long nights of loneliness in a foreign country. Everything is so, well, foreign to you. The food, the customs, even the way people "do church." Everything in Canaan was different than it had been in Ur of Chaldeans.

Sometimes even a cross-country move can throw you into "culture shock." I have experienced this on one or two occasions. You feel so lonely, so out of place, so not at home. None of us would ever be where we are "in Christ" today had it not been for the faith of Abraham that caused him to leave the familiar for the unknown. And give Sarah some credit too. The were "one flesh" and dwelt in this strange, foreign country as one. Here I must give my dear wife credit for helping me through those down times when we moved from one part of the country to another. Her faith was stronger than mine and I leaned on her for that strength. Just as we all must lean on God when we find ourselves in a strange and foreign place in our life.

Hymn: "I've seen the lightning flashing, and heard the thunder roll. I've felt sin's breakers dashing, trying to conquer my soul; I've heard the voice of Jesus, telling me still to fight on. He promised never to leave me, never to leave me alone." (Author unknown)

Did you ever notice that Abraham always "pitched" his tents and "built" his altars? I think this reflects the nature of his thinking, that his home on earth was temporary but his relationship to God was permanent. (Hebrews 11:16)

Keep up the good work, brother.
