KEEP OUT THE DEVIL

DAY 19 - Down in Jamaica, or so I am told, the Christians love to sing a chorus that includes the lines: "Shut the door, keep out the devil. Shut the door, keep the devil in the night. Shut the door, keep out the devil. Light the candle, every thing's all right." Or something like that. But the thought is true. If we want to have the mind of Christ we must shut the door on the devil.
Ananias and his wife Sapphira failed to shut the door on the devil and paid for their mistake with their lives. They conspired to deceive the apostles. Peter said to him, "How is it that Satan has so taken possession of your heart, that you have defrauded the holy Spirit?" (Acts 5:3 TCNT). In verse 4 Peter phrased the question in a different way. "How is it that you have contrived this deed in your heart" (RSV). Ananias drops dead. Three hours later Sapphira waltzes in. Peter puts the question to her as he had done with her husband. "How could you two have agreed and conspired together to try to deceive the Spirit of the Lord?" (Amplified New Testament). Once you let the devil in the door, look out! You will think and say and do things you never dreamed possible. "Don't give the devil that sort of foothold" (Eph. 4:27 Phillips). Shut the door of your mind on Satan. Don't let Satan fill your heart like he did with A & S. Shut the door and light the candle of God's Word! Then everything will be all right! All right? All right!
Hymn: And though this world with devils (i.e., demons) filled, should threaten to undo us, we will not fear, for God hath willed His truth to triumph through us.
The Prince of Darkness grim, we tremble not for him; his rage we can endure, for lo, his doom is sure; one little world shall fell him (Martin Luther).
