ELEVATE YOUR THINKING

DAY 11 - Let's think today about elevating our thinking - having a higher standard for our thought patterns. It is so easy to think on the earth level when God wants our minds to soar like eagles. Ponder the counsel that Paul have the Christians in Colosse. "Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is seated at the right hand of God. Set your mind on things above, not on earthly things" (Col. 3:1,2 NIV). Now there it is, plain and simple. The New Living Translation says, "Let heaven fill your thoughts."
For a people whose only hope is heaven, we don't think about heaven nearly enough. Heaven is our eternal destination but is seldom the subject of our contemplation or the topic of our discussion, let alone our thought patterns. What strange people we are! Why should Paul have to tell Christian people, who have been raised with Christ (in baptism, see Col. 2:12), to set our hearts and minds on things above? I think it because he knew the magnetic pull of earth. There is so much around us to occupy our thoughts and keep us from elevating our thoughts - the world, our own flesh, the devil. With every waking thought we must consciously elevate our thinking. What is above? Christ, our loved ones in Christ, eternal joys, the no-sin zone. If it helps, go to the window and simply look to the heavens. Get outside and lift your eyes and arms to the skies. David did. Are you better than him? "I lift up my eyes to the hills - where does my help come from? My help comes from the LORD, the Maker of heaven and earth" (Psa. 121:1 NIV).
Prayer/Hymn of resolve:
I am resolved no longer to linger, charmed by the world's delight
Things that are higher, things that are nobler, these have allured my sight.
