THE TRUE LIGHT

"He was not that Light, but was sent to bear witness of the Light. That was the true Light which gives light to every man coming in to the world" (John 1:8,9 NKJV). The last few weeks Evelyn has been busy putting up lights in our home, decorating for Christmas. On Saturday I helped her string those old-fashioned large colored lights on the evergreen bushes in front of our home. We leave them on all night for people passing by to enjoy.

John the Baptist was sent to bear witness of the Light. So should you and I. Jesus Christ is the "True Light," implying there are false lights that would lead people astray. Christ and Christ alone gives light to every person who enters the world. No wonder He proclaimed, "I am the Light of the world" (John 8:12). Imagine a world where there is no light. When I fly at night I am always grateful for the people on the ground who make sure the runway is lighted so the pilot can bring us safely down. I am thankful today that Jesus of Nazareth remains "the light of men" (John 1:4) and shines like a beacon on the shore to all who are lost in the night. I am also thankful that He has not left us without witness, but has given us the light of His Word. "Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path" (Psalm 119:105 NKJV). Don't be distracted by the light show of the world at Christmas. Look for the True Light that is found only in Jesus Christ and His Holy Word.

Hymn: "O little town of Bethlehem, how still we see thee lie! Above thy deep and dreamless sleep the silent stars go by; yet in thy dark streets shineth The Everlasting Light; the hopes and fears of all the years are met in thee tonight" (Phillips Brooks).
