THE DIVINE VINE

"I am the vine..." (John 15:5). This is the second time Jesus has declared that He is the vine. In verse I He testified, "I am the true vine." Christ is the divine vine, the vine of God's own choosing and planting. The nation of Israel was the first vine God planted. "Yet I planted you a choice (noble - NKJV) vine, wholly of pure seed. How then have you turned degenerate and become a wild vine?" (Jer. 2:21 ESV). The vineyard of Israel yielded only wild grapes (see Isa. 5:1-7). Not so with Jesus, the Divine Vine. He repeats Himself: "I am the vine."

There are all kinds of "wild vines" that produce only "wild grapes" today. It is sad that people cluster to them for their source of "spiritual" strength. There is philosophy, pop psychology, New Age thought, Eastern mysticism, transcendental meditation, all kinds of bizarre religions. Not one of these pseudo-vines can give everlasting life. The Divine Vine is the vine of God's own planting. He lives to bring glory to the Father. "This is My Beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased. Listen to Him!" The Living Christ is the True Vine and besides Him there is no other source of life that saves and keeps and satisfies! I affirm what the apostle Peter declared: "Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life" (John 6:68).

Prayer: O Living Christ, you are the True Vine! May we always cling to you for our salvation, sanctification, and spiritual strength.
