DEITY SEEKING RESIDENCY

Do you remember the story of Jesus and Zacchaeus? He said to the little man perched in the sycamore tree, "Zacchaeus, make haste and come down, for today I must stay at your house" (Luke 19:5). That is the same request Jesus makes of you in today's text. "Abide in Me, and I in you" (John 15:4). Our Lord wants to abide in us - He wants to abide in you! He wants to make His home in your heart. This is Deity seeking residency in our lives! That is quite a thought, is it not? Is there "room in the Inn" (your heart) for Jesus? Can you hang out this sign: "Room to let. Inquire within."
It has always amazed me that even the lukewarm church at Laodicea received this request from Jesus. "Behold I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and dine with him, and he with Me" (Rev. 3:20 NKJV). Dining with Deity! Amazing! Perhaps it is because the Son of Man did not have a place to lay His head in life (Luke 9:58) that He longs to abide in us. This phrase "I in you" appears twice in v. 4. "I in him" is found in v. 5. "My words in you" is found in v. 7. I get the picture. Jesus wants to come in and find a home in our hearts. The question is: Do we want Him to come in? Andrew Murray on "I in you" - "The 'I in you' cannot come because the 'abide in Me' is not maintained. The graft must have grown into the stem, and be abiding in it before the sap can flow through to bring fruit...The work enjoined on us: 'Abide in Me,' will prepare us for the work undertaken by Him: 'I in you.'" When we "abide in Him" He will abide with us.
Chorus: "Into my heart, into my heart, come into my heart, Lord Jesus.
Come in today, come in to stay, come into my heart, Lord Jesus" (Harry D. Clarke).
