"...and every branch that bears fruit He prunes, that it may bear more fruit" (John 15: 2 NKJV).

In contrast with the fruitless branch which is cut off, the fruit-bearing branch is "pruned" so that it will bear even more fruit. After all, that is the purpose of having a vineyard. As the branches of Christ, we are to bear fruit, more fruit, and much fruit. Pruning is the process by which this takes place. The Amplified New Testament says, "He cleanses and repeatedly prunes every branch that continues to bear fruit, to make it bear more and richer and more excellent fruit." In a sense we are "pruned" juice for Jesus! Pruning makes us "divine wine" fit for a royal banquet.

Pruning (cutting back, trimming off) produces a greater harvest. Remember the grapes of Eshcol that the spies found when they entered the Promised Land(Num. 13:23)? They were so large and rich and heavy that it took two men to carry one cluster on a pole! (Eshcol means "cluster.") The only way grapes get that way is if they "abide in the vine" (much more on this aspect later) and are receptive to "pruning." Pruning is what leads to a great harvest. But who wants to be pruned? Not many of us. The gardener (God) must use a pruning knife to accomplish His will. But remember, the Vine feels it too! Christ can sympathize with us when we are pruned. He knows it is for our good. Pruning proves that Almighty God is at work in our life. Tomorrow we will discover the agent that God uses for pruning in our lives.

Hymn: "The hill of Zion yields a thousand sacred sweets before we reach the heavenly fields...or walk the golden streets" (Isaac Watts).
