IN WORD OR DEED

"And whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus..." (Col. 3:17a NKJV).
Perhaps words are mentioned before deeds because we probably speak more words in a day that we accomplish deeds. "After all is said and done, more is said than done." Be that as it may, it is important that our speech and actions be done in the name of Christ. Moffat says, "in dependence upon the Lord Jesus." We need to give more thought to what we say and do before we say it or do it! The Living Bible says, "as a representative of the Lord." Wow, that is powerful! We are ambassadors of Christ. We are representing the Lord Jesus Christ. That should govern what we say and do, right?
Does my speech reflect Christ? Are my actions in keeping with His? Do others take note that we have been with Jesus by what we say and do? Thomas a Kempis said, "Determine a plan of action in the morning, and then evaluate yourself at night. How have you behaved today? What were your words, your deed, your thoughts?" I'm glad he mentioned our thoughts because it is out of the heart that we speak and act. Someone has noted, "Whatever a man does he must do first in his mind." Set a goal tomorrow that you will only think and speak and do as a representative of Jesus Christ.
This poem from Henry Van Dyke may help:
Four things a man must learn to do
If he would make his record true:
To think without confusion clearly
To love his fellowman sincerely
To act from honest motives purely
To trust in God and heaven securely.
