MY HEART: A HOME FOR CHRIST'S WORDS

"Let Christ's teaching live in your hearts..." (Col. 3:16a, The N.T. in Modern English, J. B. Phillips).

My heart should be a home for the teachings of Christ. Jesus wants this to happen - He really does. He desires that His words abide (dwell) in our hearts (John 15:7). To "abide" or "dwell" means "to stay in a given place - continue, endure, be present, remain, stand, tarry." I like the Amplified N. T. here. "Let the word [spoken by] the Christ, the Messiah, have its home (in your hearts and minds)..."

It is both a humbling and thrilling thought that the Greatest Teacher in the History of Mankind wants our hearts to be a depository for His Teachings! A Bible on the shelf is no substitute for the living Word of Christ in our hearts. I have dozens, perhaps scores, of Bibles on my shelves at both my home and office, but if I do not permit the Word of Christ to dwell in my heart what good do they do? I need to remember those teachings, meditate on them, share them, teach them, and most importantly, live them out each day of my life. George Mueller said, "The vigor of our spiritual life will be in exact proportion to the place held by the Bible in our life and thoughts." Make your heart a home for the teachings of Christ. His words are spirit and life (John 6:63).

Hymn: "Sing them over again to me, wonderful words of Life;
Let me more of their beauty see, wonderful words of Life.
Words of life and beauty, teach me faith and duty:
Beautiful words, wonderful words, wonderful words of Life." (P. P. Bliss)
