THE GOLDEN CHAIN

This is the 600th "Honey from the Rock" since we began back in August 2006. We thank God for allowing us to come this far by faith and we thank you for joining us on this journey. Today we will look at "The Golden Chain."
"And, above everything else, be truly loving, for love is the golden chain of all the virtues" (Col. 3:14, The N.T. in Modern English). Love is the greatest thing in the world. It bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things (1 Cor. 13:7). Browning said that if you took away love the earth would be left a tomb. Paul said that without love we become a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal (1 Cor. 13:1 ESV). Love trumps everything else. The one who loves, consistently and completely, is most like God for "God is love."
Practicing love in the church will prevent discord and division. The NIV reads, "And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them together in perfect unity." Love is the glue that will keep us together. If we come unstuck it is because we have quit loving each other. Love covers a multitude of sins. It doesn't cover up but it does cover over. "Love is the link of the perfect life" (Moffat's translation of Col. 3:14). But notice that we still must "put on" this great love. We must willing clothe ourselves with the mantle of mercy, the cape of compassion, the greatcoat of God's great love. Someone has rightly said, "Nobody will know what you mean by saying that 'God is love' unless you act it as well." Love isn't love until you give it away.
Hymn: "Look all around you, find someone in need, help somebody today! Though it be little - a neighborly deed - help somebody today! Help somebody today, somebody along life's way; let sorrow be ended, the friendless befriended, oh, help somebody today!" (Mrs. Frank M. Breck)
